Happy Birthday BET - 33 years in the making!

Today Black Entertainment Television (BET), founded by Robert L. Johnson and Shelia Johnson, began broadcasting from Washington DC. It was the 1st black owned company to be listed on the NYSE in 1991. In the beginning BET broadcasted for 2 hours a week. It wasn’t until 1984 that BET became a full cable network. In 2003 the Johnsons sold the network to Viacom for $3 billion making them the wealthiest black couple in the nation at that time.

The 57th Presidential Inauguration

 
"Fulfilling the Dream"



On MON 21 JAN 2013 we celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's 27th federal holiday celebration and President Obama's 2nd inauguration. Obama's 1st inauguration in 2009 1.8 million were in attendance. Out beating the record set by President Lyndon Johnson’s inauguration in 1965 - 1.2 million attended. This year the estimation is 1 million. Regardless of how many attended or watched this historical event MLK's dream continues to be fulfilled!

2012 White House Easter Egg Roll - MON 9 APR

This year's Easter Egg Roll Theme at the White House is "Let's Go, Let's Play, Let's Move" and this is the 134th celebration. The Obama's are expecting over 35,000 persons to attend this year's event. Here's more detail information on the 2012 White House Easter Egg Roll on the South Lawn.

Unsung

Rachelle Ferrell, the woman with the UNBELIEVABLE voice, will never get her just do as one of the best singers of all time. She's known as a contemporary jazz artist, but has managed to cross over into the R&B, pop and classical genres.

Not only can she sing, she's a songwriter and a musician (plays the violin and piano). She has worked with such legends like Lou Rawls and George Duke.  Checkout her YouTube Aretha 70th Birthday Wishes. This lady needs to be on TV One's Unsung!!!

Sparkle Soundtrack

The original Sparkle Soundtrack was release in the mid 1970s. All songs were written by Curtis Mayfield (1942-1999) and featured Aretha Franklin - "The Queen of Soul", who recently turned 70 on 25 MAR 2012. Please note Sparkle set the tone for the movie Dreamgirls.

Ms. Houston, co-producer of the movie, wanted Aaliyah (1979-2001) to play the role as Sparkle. Unfortunately, Aaliyah passed away too soon as well! Checkout Aaliyah's You Tube remake of Donny Hathaway's (1945-1979) "Giving Up" Vide...

Sidney Poitier receives Presidental Medal of Freedom


Mr. Sidney Poitier receives the highest civilian award from Obama.
He is the first black male actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor,
in 1963, for Lilies of the Field.
In 1999, the American Film Institute name him the
Greatest Male Star of All Time.

Request for a Michael Jackson US Stamp

 
Rev Al. Sharpton is pushing for a commerative US Stamp depicting Michael Jackson immediately! This process usual takes a 5 year waitng post death period. The only exception so far has been for late presidents. We shall see how quickly a stamp becomes available in his honor. - God Bless you MJ!

Sojourner Truth honored with a memorial at the US Capitol


Sojourner Truth (1797-1883) was the self-gvien name of Isabella Baumfree.

On 28 APR American history will be made. The National Congress of Black Women, Inc. (NCBW) will introduce Sojourner Truth as the first Black Woman to have a memorial bust in the United States Capitol.
