Happy Birthday BET - 33 years in the making!

Today Black Entertainment Television (BET), founded by Robert L. Johnson and Shelia Johnson, began broadcasting from Washington DC. It was the 1st black owned company to be listed on the NYSE in 1991. In the beginning BET broadcasted for 2 hours a week. It wasn’t until 1984 that BET became a full cable network. In 2003 the Johnsons sold the network to Viacom for $3 billion making them the wealthiest black couple in the nation at that time.
